He applied a decidedly punk ethos to his brand of neo- boom bap on early releases like 2009’s Realistic Expectations and 2011’s Useless Eaters, albums that celebrated his youthful indiscretions but also signaled an old soul lying beneath the surface. He opted to release them on punk\/indie labels (including Run For Cover and Ride The Fury Records) instead of more traditional hip-hop outlets, and along with an ambitious touring schedule, he carved out a dedicated fanbase throughout the early 2010’s. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs GDP’s following grew, making ends meet as an independent artist in New York City became increasingly prohibitive, and the project he’d started as a 17 year old began to lose it’s luster after years of pounding the pavement. He ventured into film and photography work under the pseudonym George Douglas Peterson, exploring new mediums in an effort to scratch the creative itch. He published zines and photo books, directed music videos and even found his way into global health work, documenting and coordinating medical missions to some of the most impoverished regions of the world. But he always kept music close, whether playing drums in the hardcore punk band Ankle Monitor, or his electro grind-core side project, Orange Crystal. G began working sporadically with fellow  NJ-bred wordsmith Fatboi Sharif and the two eventually released a collaborative album, ENDOCRINE, on steel tipped dove’s Fused Arrow Records in 2025. The project led to him experimenting with more ideas and he quietly began clawing his way back to GDP with renewed purpose. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCross Off Matthew is a slow-cooked labor of love, born out of taking enough time away from something to understand the journey with greater perspective and appreciation.“I’m older, arguably wiser, but that creative fire stayed with me,” he says. “I wanted to make something that felt nuanced, something that I could feel proud of.” Throughout the album, the production toggles between foreboding and facetious just as deftly as his bars. Tracks like “Island In The Sky” and “Location Therapy” make rap confetti out of caustic guitars and glaring distortion, while “Seroquel” and “Rock For Light,” (the latter a nod to NJ rap royalty, The Outsidaz) embrace GDP’s signature blend of East Coast hip-hop and punk sensibilities, with lyrics that highlight the sharp wit and heady philosophizing that he made his name on. GDP examines vices, interpersonal relationships, the collective dread of late-stage capitalism as well as the pitfalls and rewards of trying to lead a creative life throughout it all. The wiseman that peaked out from beneath the shield of debauchery on his early releases has now come to the forefront, as GDP’s trademark humor and commentary feel refined by years of life lived experience. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt all comes to a head on the serendipitous closer “Doom Loop” interrogating his own motivations for making music amidst relationships gone awry. His vulnerabilities are laid bare in a compelling breathe of emotional clarity, contextualizing not only the preceding songs on the album but the choices made, the bonds formed and collapsed that led him to this writing it in the first place.
