Everyone knows Pat is a pretty interesting guy. Alex and I are lucky enough to know Pat pretty well, so it wasn’t very hard to come up with some interesting questions for him. We’re only 4 Small Talk episodes in, but I have a feeling this is going to go down as the longest one.
Let’s address the “leveling up” of the music world: The jump from small label to slightly bigger label. In the past couple months, three bands I’m friends with have told me they’ve gotten sniffed by indie rock labels. Large indie rock labels. Like, “oh, is that still an indie label even or are they now a wing of a major?” sort of shit. Nothing wrong with that, and I advised at least one of them to pursue it. But, if you’ve got options, bigger isn’t always better.
“In the view of some people, we’re too indie a band for our label home, Deathwish Inc. And, in the view of other people, we’re too gritty for labels we’ve partnered with on one-off releases (RFC, for example). Some people believe us to be “cool” and wonder why we would choose to work with UNCOOL LABEL YX.”
